The albums and images in this album document the removal of the Cheltenham and Park Road level crossings, and the placement of the railway lines in a trench below ground level.
It is broken up into four sections - Before, During and After construction, and then when all surrounds and car park had beeen finished.
The works took over a year and a half in total, with the railway line out of action for only six weeks, and the station for a couple of months. A remarkable achievement, considering the scale of the works. The Park Road, Charman Road and Balcombe Road level crossings were all removed simultaneously, requiring the complete rebuilding of the Cheltenham and Mentone stations. The third line was also installed from Highett to just past the Cheltenham station, allowing for more express services from the outer suburbs on the Frankston line.
